Founded in 1793, New Market, MD has long been a convenient rest stop for travelers passing by on the National Pike. The quaint small town once provided an array of services for both travelers and local farmers. Though the blacksmith and tannery are now gone, the town’s pleasant colonial atmosphere remains. Today’s travelers visit New Market for its brick-lined streets, antique shops, art gallery, specialty boutiques and general store. With less than 1,000 year-round residents in town, and about 4,000 more in the surrounding areas, the region remains uncluttered and distant from the activity of the city. New Market, however, is only about 10 miles southeast of the city of Frederick and 37 miles north of Washington D.C. The town is also served by several major roadways, including Interstate 70 and State Routes 874 and 144. The local economy relies on retail trade, particularly antiques, though the educational, health and social services sector also provides many local jobs. Students in grades K-12 are accommodated by schools of the Frederick County Board of Education. Several colleges and universities are in proximity for those who wish to attain a degree in higher education. Mealey’s Restaurant is one of the town’s most popular attractions. Opened in 1793, Mealey’s has been satisfying the hunger of locals and visitors ever since. There are also three regional parks within about 15 miles of New Market to serve a variety of recreational needs.
