The Monocacy National Battlefield, the site of an 1864 Civil War battle, is located approximately 15 miles from New Market, MD. The battle was the Confederacy’s final attempt to push the fighting northward. Today, visitors can pick up a map and drive to the battlefield and the five monuments on site. There is also an educational visitor center which includes displays, interactive computer programs and artifacts. Volunteers offer programs for all ages throughout the year.

Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy nearby regional parks and the WestWinds Golf Course. WestWinds’ 18-hole course was designed by William F. Mitchell in 1974 and makes use of the diverse landscape to create a challenge for any level golfer. With rolling hills, patches of forest and jagged creeks, the course is both beautiful and difficult.

Residents can relax at one of several large parks just outside of New Market, MD. Little Bennett Regional Park, Black Hills Regional Park and Temple Hall Farm Regional Park are all within a short driving distance. Little Bennett is primarily a camping facility and offers 91 campsites on 3,700 acres of forested land. Black Hills is known for its trails, which climb up and down the rugged landscape and provide views of Little Seneca Lake. Temple Hall Farm Regional Park provides a different experience. Temple Hall is a 286-acre working farm, complete with goats, chickens, pigs, sheep, peacocks and more. Designed as an outdoor classroom, the facility offers educational programs for youth groups. Tours allow children to learn about and participate in farm activities, including feeding animals and gardening.
